Keto / Fasting Recap-November 2019

eatByClock-692791190-770x553-1-650x428

I know this post is late…well what can I say, Im one of those “time challenged” individuals.

However the good news is I cannot say how incredibly happy I am with my November results!!

Drum roll please..Image result for Drum roll image"

A total of loss of 10.9lbs!!! Oh Yeah!!

So approx loss of 36lbs since end of August!!! INCREDIBLE!

I definitely can say that the more I fast, the easier it becomes; less hunger, less growling & less intrusion from ma bellie resisting in fury. I also have noticed less negative reactions from my peeps around me who had been commenting on my lack of eating and my regular fasting, as though it was a bad thing, when really most concerns are just a case of misinformation. I do my best to educate on a few things I’ve learned along the way & this seems to put most loved ones at ease, so onward and downward :).

Most of November I again stuck to 3x 42hr fasts per week, and I may have tossed in a 48hr fast or so once or twice, ending with a 5day fast again as I did last month.

And WOW

Its been an exciting journey so far. The last week in August when I began this journey I never once thought that my first 42 hr fast would lead me to a continuous pursuit of so much more fasting and such amazing results. Turns out fasting is “the” other step in my journey to health & happiness and Im so very happy about that.

EXTENDED FASTING & MCT OIL

The World's First Certified Organic MCT Oil kitchen.nutiva.com

So its been a couple of months of extending my fast beyond the 42 hours, which was the goal I initially set for this  month and last.

Surprisingly to myself its not been as hard as I thought it would be, and extended fasting really does get easier with more fasting believe it or not.

One of the habits I have decided to do incorporate into my ” break-fast” is to add in MCT oil into my black coffee as the first “food” item going back into my body to assist & promote extended ketone production in my liver, or so Ive read.

From my research on how to end a fast (primarily when I do a 5day fast) I found that there was a significant amount of “health” promoters who suggest adding in MCT Oil for reasons such as:

“BENEFITS OF MCT OIL WHILE INTERMITTENT FASTING…

  • Prolonged Satiety- may help extend fasting period
  • Increased Weight Loss
  • Increased Energy Expenditure
  • Enhanced Longevity
  • Improved Blood Sugar
  • Enhanced Brain Function

Though more research needs to be done on the effects of combining the use of MCT oil while intermittent fasting, there seems to be a lot of potential benefits with any use of MCT oil.: As per

Once I have established a true measure of establishing if my ketones or weight loss is increased with the MCT, I will update. What I can say for now it that the product is very edible, great on salads and my brain tells me “yeh, this is easy “. :).

October Keto Fasting Recap

Image result for weight & measuring body cartoons

So the data is finally in……..

The total result for October is a weight loss of 7.6 lbs and a little more than 8″ total loss of my entire body ( including 2′ off my chubba wugga hips! yay) , which I am very pleased with.  A total loss of 25 lbs ( give or take a cpl ounces) for the past 9 weeks if we are including just since the time with extended fasting.

I am very thrilled that I was still able to lose this month despite the indiscretions with my 1-2 high carbs day fails.

What I did do that was different this month was my goal was to extend my 3 x 42 hr fasts into longer fasts and even though I started off slow and unsure what a longer fast would feel like, I ensured lots of reading, preparation, electrolyte awareness and even some regular exercise was added in to give me the best outcome.

I began extending my fasts the first week of October just trying to stretch it out to a  48hr fast, which I admit was challenging , yet I pushed myself and used social media to inform and motivate me to reach my goal of at least one 72hr fast, yet I pushed on.

FASTING SCHEDULE:

Week 1 -Total 121Hrs : 9/28/19- 42hr 10/01/19-42hr  10/03/19-42hr

Week 2 89hrs-10/05/19 46hr- 10/08/19-48hrs

Week 3-101hrs – 10/11/19- 65hr 10/14/19- 23hrs 10/17/19 -66hrs

Week 4 – 120hrs 10/25/19 10/28/19- 27 hrs 10/30/19  44hrs

Well I was able to achieve the longest fast I had ever done and I am proud to report I was very successful in accomplishing my first ever 5 day fast (120hrs) !

I did that! Yes, Yes, Yes I did!  WOOT WOOT!

I had also obsessed over how to re-feed as once in my past I had a bad experience after a 4 day fast and now in hindsight I see my bad experience was completely due to not preparing and being informed on how to reintroduce food. So this time I was much smarter.

First food item: MCT Oil – in my black coffee as I learned that dairy is inflammatory to the body & introducing food would be best without.

MCT-Oil-Benefits

That was all I had after breaking my fast that evening at 10pm or so.

The next day was also so very important and I had  a kombucha drink- sorry I dont remember the name , but it was low carb ( I think 1-2 carbs total) sparkling low ginger lemon drink.

And then I had some Gut Shot & Sauerkraut to reintroduce probiotics into my system a couple hours later before I had a real meal of a salad and fresh veggies/

Breaking a fst..Food

I know so many people want to know stats and loss amount after extended fasts however I cannot report on what that actual loss looked on the scale as I am still refusing to repeat my past mistakes of my former scale obsession & continue to be committed to weighting in just the beginning of the month to prevent myself from crazy making thoughts again.

I cannot even say how incredibly happy I am very happy with the outcome so far. Im looking at a goal weight that will need to decrease my current weight down at least another 25-30lbs  but with incredible motivation I can finally see it coming around the corner.

I continue to take the stairs at work & workout 3 times a week for approx 1hr, just light weights and

For now these are my results, Im thrilled. Feeling AMAZING!!

Yay Collar Bones..hello!

Thanksgiving- Keto Fail

Well if I am going to post my success then I also have to post my fails.

This weekend was exactly that A FAIL !

A BIG Fail, a stumble, a fall, a trip, a wobble face first into my self diagnosed sugar addicted self which certainly included pie & chocolate as my old self emerged.

I often say it, “Oh God I’m such a sugar ADDICT, I really cant have one piece of anything ” and then I do !

Related image

And of course when I eat something on the naughty list I never stop there, I always say well If Im blowing it I may as well have……. X Y Z…which means BRING IT!

So with a knowing that only I knew, I ate the things that I knew I shouldn’t, enjoyed them immensely and suffered the consequences of a bloated belly for two days.

Good news is I only weigh myself once a month so somehow this makes me feel much better as stepping on that scale 100% would of been worse.

My mother was so right..

Fasting Insights

See the source image

Welcome October and to the month of being THANKFUL

I have so much to be thankful for and first Id like to say thank you to myself for finding the strength and courage to stay in an inspired state in terms of  my keto/ fasting journey as well as feeling grateful to my spirit who always pushes me to challenge myself in this long, tangled road to my own health & wellness.

INSPIRATION COMES IN MANY FORMS

Happy to report I am strongly holding on to my goals and so far doing well. Keeping myself inspired comes from many different forms such as the regular inspiration I gain from social media support groups I follow, Dr. Fung’s books on health, keto & fasting, trying on my once too tight clothes and seeing them fit better (YES!) , the amazing fit people online who consistently share HOW TO videos and articles and especially to my family, friends and co-workers who may not always understand the whys behind my diet and lifestyle, but who support me anyhow. THANK YOU!

I have approached October with some new goals and also happy to say again…so far so good.  I also decided last night that I wanted to record any changes I have made in this past week/month on my blog. This of course is primarily for me as a way to remember what I’m doing but also as part of my ever trying mix it up and to see if switching up my fasting will prevent my body from going into another plateau or comfort zone.

I had also promised myself that this month I would mix it up with even longer extended fasts, and albeit the options are many, so far have been sticking to the 42hr fasts and just ever so slightly squeezing in a few more hours to reach this goal of longer extended fast times.

Last week on Thursday I met with friends for dinner which inadvertently fell on a feast day. I thought good timing , no worries I can handle it, I’ve got this under control.

Well not so much, I crashed and fell…definitely not a proud keto moment!  bamtech-logo

I way over indulged with some of my favorite dishes at the buffet, bad, bad me , even splashed some ice-cream and dessert in there too…when I’m in, good or bad, IM ALL IN..nom nom nom (a little food addiction..ya think..lol).

And somewhere while swimming in my non keto food I had this epiphany to perhaps consider extending my fast starting that night (Thursday) to Saturday with a 48hr fast instead of the 42hr fasts I had been doing.

So that was the plan.

RESULTS

Well I can say that I likely could have done this 48 fast however I buckled under the weight of food aromas everywhere and I gave in at the 46 hour mark, which overall still made me pretty happy.

With keeping my goals in mind yesterday (again cant tell you how awesome & empowering fasting is) I again wanted to see how far I could organically stretch my fast without too much discomfort.  My goal was 48hrs but I dreamed of a 60hr fast.

I was successful in making it to 48hrs this time!! WOOT WOOT !

So that was amazing and I now know I can do it again. In the recent past I had done an extended 64hr fast and even once a couple years ago a 96hr  fast, but it was not while continuously following a weekly fast/feast schedule as I have been.

Overall I’m happy with how the 48hr fast made me feel and now have decided to try to complete another 48hr fast (having started last night) till Thursday at 730 and perhaps adding in just the One Meal A Day style of diet as part of my feasting window for the rest of the month for these two of three fasts per week.

And one last note to self…daily stairs this week...yuck!!

P3 to P2 (14stairs ) P2 to P1 (14stairs ), Ground Floor – Floor 2 (5 + 18stairs) & Floor 2 to 3 – (18stairs).

Extended Fasting & Keto Sept – Oct- Updates

See the source image

So last time I checked in I had written about my journey from my typical Low Carb Keto lifestyle, which I have been “more or less” practicing for over 3+ years to my recent decision to kick it up a notch and add in a new practice, something known to the fasting community as Extended Fasting.

When I first read about extended fasting what I first thought was this is “a means to an end” and a diet challenge/add on, not necessarily a lifestyle or something to do more than once if you did not need to do it, you know a quit lose 3-4 lbs kinda thing, but I was wrong.

The information and details I have found out since I began my research on fasting has proven to me there is so much more to this fasting thing than just a one off try it  challenge.  Fasting is not only an age old practice (which of course I knew about the religious practices of fasting) but what I didn’t know much about was how trendy and very scientific the practice had become in the health and fitness community. There is so much information about this “lifestyle” that I am astounded with the information I have learned from a health perspective and how it can help with so many other ways to improve health, not to mention to anti-aging properties!!

I HAVE FINALLY HIT DA JACKPOT! or so I told myself.

It turns out many people use extended fasting in combination with various diets such as keto and low carb to further increase results in their weight loss journey and to break stalls and plateaus,  but the practice of fasting goes much deeper than how much fat you may wish to lose, there are so many health benefits I am shocked, who knew!

As someone who loves a challenge I wanted to see if I could in fact go 42 hrs without food, and of course to do it  for three cycles in a week, so Fasting essentially from Sunday at 7pm-till Tuesday at 1pm, then Tues at 7pm- till Thurs at 1pm and lastly Thurs from 7pm to Sat at 1pm, whoo….I think I can, I think I can!

Yeh it seemed like a crazy plan and not eating has always been such a taboo even for those like me who are regular dieters,  but I wanted to see how I felt and what kind of results would be offered on the almighty scale for my once a month weigh in after a full month of weekly fasts.

SCALE ADDICTION UPDATE: I am still happy to say I am managing not to hop off & on the scale as I have done all my life and have kept with the challenge of a once a month weight in, so far so good).

As posted previously, that first extended fast was at the end of my August keto challenge and for the first time in months I saw the scale drop by 8.4lbs ( WOWZERS).

At that point, more than a month ago, it was hard for me to know if I had just followed my diet in such a way that I was finally seeing a change or if it was because of the fasting, so I decided to FAST ON.

See the source image

And to continue on with finding out the true knowing of my weight loss for August I again continued the same 3 x 42hr fast each week for the full month of September.

Hopping on the scales at the beginning of September was exciting as I could tell my clothes were getting looser and yup, more weight lose was definitely in my future. I really didn’t care if it was 1lb or 3lbs, however it turned out to be another

8.7lbs loss and I was astounded!! YAZOOOOOO~~~

So in total over 8 weeks that was

  17.1 lbs loss….yeahhhhhhhhh..yahooooooooo...yipppeeeeee.

See the source image

So to answer that question does extended fasting work, YES, can you keep doing it and feel good, YES, YES!!

Needless to say I have decided to continue on my fasting journey in October and have also continued to add in other goals as well, such as taking the stairs every Mon Wed & Friday at work in Sept to now increasing the stairs to every day since last week, so thats 3-4 flights of stairs depending on the parking level I get at work, and yeah its hard…ugh..I don like it….but IM doing IT!

Also about a month or so I began to practice yoga on Mondays and also added in 60 squats 3 x a week due to the deflating of my ass which is concerning to my guy..lol.. I lift low weights (5.5lb each) at least 3 times a week to increase muscle mass and to hopefully tone up those bingo wings and also to assist with autophagy (a new special word and process I have also learned about recently) which I intend on accessing more often.

In truth I cant believe how much energy I have while fasting and TRUST ME I FEEL AMAZING, most of the time, although I do get “h-angry at least once or twice a week 😦 , but I am trying hard not to focus on that, good luck to my family though…hehe :).

I believe in myself and I will see my goal weight in the next 6months or less…THIS IS A FACT!

Keto Challenge- August- Sept

Image result for Dr fung Extended Weight

Through my recent journeys and numerous Keto re-starts of my “lazy keto lifestyle”, it had become insanely obvious that I was stuck and stalled for a ridiculous amount of time. I thought I tried many variations of my fairly new keto lifestyle and I could not figure out why my scale was not staying down.  Each week I watched in frustration as the same weekly 3-4 lbs of weight fell off only to find its way back again  over and over.  It seemed my tried and true method was no longer giving me results  and I was about to lose my marbles.

Image result for marbles cartoons

I knew the many times over the past year since I plateaued I had not been faithful to myself or to my keto or low carb diet & lifestyle. I began to not pay as much attention to what went in my mouth and stopped tracking my macros allowing my new habits to slip to a mere afterthought.

I also began having regular weekly cheat (High Carb) meals which I looked forward too as I knew in my mind that within a couple days of low carb eating I would be back on track. Each week, as I clearly predicted, the scale balanced as long as I followed a couple strict low carb days before my weekend hit; and then I would do the same thing all over again. I lied to myself that I was trying really hard (especially through May-July when I hunkered down with an occasional one meal a day and several 18:6 fasts. Looking back I can now see “the tried really hard part” was not necessarily true. What I could see is that my weight had more or less stabilized and did not want to budge , seemingly comfortable with my lifestyle. My body had adjusted to a new set weight which was in no way ideal for me as I had not reached my goal weight. I knew something had changed from when I started a low carb lifestyle when 3lbs would literally fall off my body every week. I tried so hard to get back on the band wagon of loss however defeat faced me each day when I  stepped on the cruel reality of my bathroom scale. The frustration I faced after strictly following three weeks of strict keto and Intermediate fasting (daily 18:6 & the few 24hr fasts) was truly getting me into a rut and the fear that I could not , would not lose anymore weight, which truly haunted me. I really didn’t know what was happening as I staggered around hungry, confused and bewildered!!!

I knew I had to do something different from the Keto & Intermediate fasting diet I had been doing but to me this lifestyle had been the only lifestyle that resulted in weight loss and maintenance, so my bigger fear was that there was NOTHING else!    All along I kept telling myself “I got this, it will happen”, yet it didn’t,  nothing happened except despair! I watched week after week the scale going up – down, up – down. Was there really anything else I could do, had the keto magic disappeared? How was this possible?

So I thought let me go back to the beginning before I learned the bad habits I developed since I began keto and started back with the basics. I ran over to the local book store Chapters and invested in myself and bought Dr Fung’s initial book “The Obesity Code”. Had it not been for an article promoting Dr. Fungs book more than 2 years ago I may never has heard or known about the low carb lifestyle which eventually led me down the road to my weight loss.  for the past 2.5 years I had been following many low carb , keto websites and blogs however never read the book. I’ve sworn myself to at least starting to read the book  for if not for Dr. Fung, these amazing, significant changes to my life would never had occurred.

I still remember that first day when I learned that there is another way to eat.  The news came in the form of a newspaper article I read stated ” Toronto Doctor finds cure for Obesity”. Being skeptical and having tried “everything else” I though I would read on and learn more. That article led me to many other links about this lifestyle/diet and then to the excitement that I could in fact be referred to the Doctor who wrote the article, Dr. Fung , for weight loss, wow!

I found and began to follow the guidelines of low carb diet and excitedly pursued a referral to Dr. Fung’s clinic in Toronto, eventually meeting Dr. Fungs Dietary Clinician, Megan Ramos. I was so ready to get started yet the to Dr. Fung took approx. 6-8mths or so and I had decided to begin the low carb diet with what information I could find online as I did not want to wait to begin my journey. Eventually I met with Megan at Dr. Fungs clinic and Megan gave me the bones of what the clinic could do for me and an outline of the low carb/keto / Fasting lifestyle which she advised would definitely benefit me.  Part of the plan was weekly support group sorta meetings which I opted out of as I wanted to continue trying on my own as my work hours made the clinic group meetings difficult for me to attend. Armed with additional information, support and bounties of enthusiasm I  began my journey.

After deciding to buy Dr. Fungs book I had a perfectly timed pop up on Facebook about a Fan Group for Dr. Fung. When I joined this group I then learned the group is actually a group to support those who follow the a fasting lifestyle and that’s when I realized where my path needed to go.  Until this point I had practiced extended fasting once for 96hrs which did not end pleasantly, however I was willing to give it a try.

Having practiced lazy keto and intermediate fasting many times I didn’t realize at the start that this group would have such a powerful effect on my journey. One of the first posts I read was about a 42 hour fasting challenge whereas you fasted from 7pm Sunday till – 1pm Tuesday’s.  I really wanted to end my August with something special as I knew I had been doing ok however I also felt not much has changed so I decided my last week of August would be 3 x 42 hr fasts. Once again I jumped in with both feet and decided to kick it up a notch and started my first ever 42hr fast which terrified me, the hunger, yikes!!

So feeling scared, excited and hopeful I weighed in on August 31st after my one week of 3 x 42 hr fasts and a fair effort of staying in keto all month and taaa daaaaa…I had drop of 8.4lbs since the beginning of the month, or I should say since the beginning of this year!!!

WOOT WOOT WOW! My first weight loss in 10mths!! I finally broke my plateau, I was so happy!

This month, Sept,  I decided I’d do it again, except this time I committed myself to  the full month of September, 3 x 42hr fasts week after week, no weigh ins and also to increase my exercise by adding in strength training and 4-5 flights of stairs at work every Mon, Wed & Friday.

With this being my last week of the month I cant wait to see where my scale finds me on Friday this week.

I began taking pictures since week 1 and I can definitely see changes, so I am very excited to see where I am in numbers. Id love to see an 8lbs loss again, but 5lbs will made me very happy! Cross your toes for me!

Keto Challenge – July update

So I know its been a long time since I provided an update on my keto diet, but lets just say I completed July fairly successfully however was met head on with a cake challenge and lowered resistance on my birthday week;  which as usual for me then led to a weekend of non keto eating (not terribly high carb , maybe a moderate carb diet opposed to low carb) .

Sadly as usually my weight scored up that week ( I think something crazy like 7-8lbs) and it was a difficult next two weeks as I tried to reduce that water gain and  maintain any sort of loss which I may have had in the first two weeks of my eating.

I was back on track shortly thereafter on the Monday following (third week of July) however to be honest I did fall off track once more again before month end.  I contribute my fails primarily to this “lazy keto” lifestyle I’ve inherited over the past two years after I lost a chunk of weight however “lazy keto” works great for maintenance but not so great for breaking any stalls or helping with any new loss.

For the month of July I would say a surprise for me was that I was actually able to “mostly” maintain a diet of 20 base carbs instead of 20 net carbs and it was actually not as hard as I thought it would be, as a vegetarian. Its certainly much easier to eat a net carb base as I usually can have at last another 8-10 carbs of fiber to help me buffer my carb cravings , however in terms of my first try at 20 base carbs as a challenge I feel I was successful. Overall in terms of weight for the month of July I feel as though I could have done so much better and will continue to move towards my goal of losing more weight.

Keto Challenge Update- Day 6

Image result for keto ON

Well its been just under a week and I’m so happy to report that I have maintained an eating regime of consuming 20 total carbs a day or less for the past 6 days.

So far my weight has dropped drastically in the past 6 days however I can not count my start weight as the beginning of last week as the week prior to my challenge I was on a high carb diet for 5 days which caused my weight to soar up 10lbs in 4-5days.

I will be calculating any loss I have based on my weight prior to that gain which as of today Ive lost 3lbs above the 10lbs gained in days 2-4 which was likely just water gain etc. . or high carb shock, lol,  I dont know why it happens however anyone who goes off keto will tell you the same( boom, an explosion of temp weight gain) . so if you wan to add in that silly water gain then in total I’ve lost 13lbs.

However 3 lbs down in 6 days is still amazing. I cant wait to see what this next week will bring me to.

Im very proud of myself for two reasons, 1) I’ve never tried nor did I believe I could maintain 20 total carb or under day as a vegetarian & 2) I’ve been cheating my way through weekends and restarting a low carb week every week now for likely more than a year, so I didn’t even believe I could get out of this bad habit, which of course I still feel very high risk of, especially the week of my birthday which is coming up on the 13th.

Overall though my hunger has decreased, my motivation increased and most importantly my inflammation has been eliminated when comparing to last weeks pain.

Cant wait to see if this week I will break my stall, even with this loss, Im sorta back to where I was at Christmas, but Im reaching to get back to where I was before the New York gain last Oct which brought me to today’s current weight. So while successsful , my true determination for the month will be to get back to or under my New York weight which will be a total of 8 more pounds, so I hope I will do it.

More updates to follow..
